Genesis 32:1-32: How Jacob Take Prepare to Meet Esau and Di Fight with Angel for Night

Genesis 32:1-32 talk about how Jacob prepare to meet Esau and wrestle with an angel, receiving di new name Israel after di struggle.

1 As Jacob and him people waka go, angels of God meet am for road.

2 When Jacob see dem, he say, “Na God camp be dis!” So he call di place Mahanaim (Two Camps).

Jacob Send Message to Esau

3 Jacob send messenger go ahead go meet him brother Esau wey dey for di land of Seir, for Edom.

4 He tell dem say, “Make una go tell my lord Esau say, ‘Your servant Jacob talk say: I don dey stay with Laban till now.’”

5 “‘I get cow, donkey, sheep, goat, servant men and women. I wan send dis message to you my lord, make I fit find favor for your eye.’”

6 When di messenger dem return, dem tell Jacob say, “We don go meet your brother Esau, and e dey come meet you with 400 men.”

7 Jacob fear well well and e heart dey shake. So he divide di people and animals wey dey with am into two groups.

8 He say, “If Esau come attack one group, di other group fit run escape.”

Jacob Pray to God

9 Then Jacob pray say, “O God of my papa Abraham and God of my papa Isaac, you tell me say make I go back to my land and family, say you go bless me.”

10 “I no deserve all di kindness and faithfulness wey you don show me. When I first cross dis Jordan River, na only my walking stick I get, but now, I don get two camps.”

11 “Save me from my brother Esau hand, because I dey fear say e go come kill me and my pikin dem.”

12 “But you talk say, ‘I go bless you, and your descendants go plenty like sand wey full for sea.’”

Jacob Prepare Gift for Esau

13 That night, Jacob sleep for di camp, and he arrange gift give Esau.

14 He separate 200 female goat, 20 male goat, 200 female sheep, 20 male sheep,

15 30 female camel with dem pikin, 40 cow, 10 bull, 20 female donkey, and 10 male donkey.

16 He put dem under di care of him servant dem, and he tell dem, “Make una go ahead, make una leave space between di group dem.”

17 He tell di first servant say, “If Esau meet you and ask, ‘Who you be? Where you dey go? Who get dis animals?’”

18 “Tell am say, ‘Na your servant Jacob own, na gift for my lord Esau. Jacob dey come behind.’”

19 He tell di second and di third servant di same thing.

20 He say, “Make una talk say, ‘Jacob dey come behind.’” Jacob think say, “Maybe if I give am gift before I see am, e go calm down, then when I see am, e go forgive me.”

21 So di gift go ahead, but Jacob sleep for di camp dat night.

Jacob Fight with Angel

22 That night, Jacob wake up, he carry him two wives, two maidservants, and him eleven pikin, he cross di Jabbok River.

23 He carry everything wey e get, cross di river.

24 But Jacob stay alone, and one man come wrestle with am till daybreak.

25 When di man see say e no fit defeat Jacob, e touch di socket of Jacob hip, di joint shift.

26 Di man say, “Make you leave me go, because day don break.” But Jacob say, “I no go leave you unless you bless me.”

27 Di man ask am, “Wetin be your name?” Jacob answer, “My name na Jacob.”

28 Di man say, “From today, your name no go be Jacob again, but Israel, because you don struggle with God and man, and you win.”

29 Jacob ask, “Wetin be your name?” But di man say, “Why you wan know my name?” Then he bless Jacob there.

30 So Jacob call di place Peniel, he say, “Because I see God face to face, and my life still dey.”

31 As Jacob dey waka from Peniel, di sun rise, but because of di hip, he dey limp.

32 Na why till today, Israelites no dey chop di sinew of di hip socket, because na there di angel touch Jacob hip.
